SOUTH SHIELDS. Archaeologists have uncovered fascinating facts in Arbeia that date as far back as the first century AD. This museum displays weapons and forts used by the Romans as well as a full-scale reproduction of the Roman Fort's West Gate. Actual archaeological digs can be viewed along with many of the artifacts that have been recovered. Hands-on and interactive activities and frequent special events are held throughout the year.

This fascinating museum, which is housed in a spacious warehouse, provides a wide variety of exhibits that appeal to a diverse group of people. The numerous displays feature topics such as robots, the Turbinia (once the world's fastest ship), and the history and development of Newcastle. Thousands of costumes describing the minutiae of the fashion world. Sundays feature special activities for families to enjoy.

BARRAS BRIDGE. A world of informational and interactive natural history exhibits is presented in this fascinating museum. Displays such as "Living Planet" illustrate the effects humans have on their environment and vice versa. Emphasis is placed on endangered species and energy conservation efforts. "Land of the Pharaohs" is another popular exhibit, which offers insight into the lives of the Ancient Egyptians. This display includes two mummies and a tomb that is typical of those times. Special programs and temporary exhibits are held throughout the year.

CITY CENTER. This establishment is one of the top art museums in the region. A wide variety of items including watercolors, sculptures, paintings, and costumes is on display. Some of the most popular items on display are "The Breton Shepardess" by Gaugin, and several pieces by John Martin, a popular English artist. Special programs consist of lunchtime talks, children's activities, and workshops for budding artists. Gallery tours are offered only on Saturdays.

TIMES SQUARE. This large museum is situated right next to the central station. The various exhibits are largely created for children, but it still contains a lot of information that adults may find interesting. The exhibits take visitors on a trip through time, illustrating the many theories regarding creation of man as it is seen through an evolutionist's eyes. The display begins with the leap from life in water to life on land, and continues to the age of dinosaurs on up to prehistoric man. Interesting shows on DNA and on the brain are provided for additional entertainment.
